Wacom Driver: How to Install, Update and Fix It on Windows and Mac

What the Wacom driver does and when you need it

The Wacom driver is the free software that lets Windows and macOS understand your Wacom pen tablet or pen display. Without it, many devices still move the cursor, but you lose pen pressure, tilt, ExpressKeys, pen button settings and screen mapping. With it, you get Wacom Center, where you register the device, check for updates and change settings.

You need the driver for Wacom Intuos, Intuos Pro, Wacom One, Cintiq, Cintiq Pro and Movink when you use them with a Windows PC or a Mac. Wacom confirms a few exceptions: Wacom Intuos, One by Wacom and Wacom One work on compatible Chromebooks without a driver, and several Wacom pen tablets also work with compatible Android phones and tablets.

Where to download the right Wacom driver

Always download the driver from Wacom’s official Drivers page (wacom.com, Support, Drivers). Third-party download sites appear in search results, but they can carry old versions. Wacom publishes one current driver for Windows and one for macOS that covers its current pen tablets and pen displays. In October 2026 that was version 6.4.15-1, for Windows 10 and 11 (x64 and ARM64) and for macOS 13 and later.

Before you install, check two things:

  • Is your device on the list? Open the release notes on Wacom’s Drivers page and select the compatible products link. Older devices may need an older driver from the same page.
  • Is it a signature pad? Wacom STU signature pads don’t use the creative tablet driver. Wacom says they don’t need a driver to work, though it recommends its separate STU driver on Windows 10 and 11 for colour models such as the STU-540. See our Wacom STU-430 guide for the business side.

How to install the Wacom driver on Windows

Wacom’s own steps for a clean install on Windows are:

  1. Disconnect the tablet. Unplug the USB cable, remove any wireless dongle, or turn off Bluetooth on the tablet and the computer.
  2. Open Control Panel, then Programs and Features, and uninstall any entry called Tablet, Wacom Tablet or Bamboo.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Download the latest driver for your device from Wacom’s Drivers page.
  5. Run the installer and follow the steps. Wacom suggests temporarily disconnecting from the internet and pausing the firewall and other security software if the installation is being blocked.
  6. After the automatic restart, reconnect the tablet directly to the computer.
  7. Open Wacom Center or Wacom Tablet Properties and test the pen, pressure and buttons.

Wacom recommends a direct connection. USB hubs, keyboard or monitor ports and docking stations can cause inconsistent behaviour.

How to install the Wacom driver on macOS

On a Mac, installing the driver is only half the job. macOS blocks input from software that wasn’t downloaded from the App Store until you allow it, so the pen may not work until the permissions are set.

  1. Download and install the current macOS driver from Wacom’s Drivers page, then connect the tablet. Choose Allow whenever macOS asks for permission.
  2. Open System Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Accessibility. Make sure every Wacom item is switched on.
  3. In the same section, open Input Monitoring and switch on WacomTabletDriver. macOS will ask the app to quit. Then restart the Mac.
  4. Check System Settings, General, Login Items, and make sure the Wacom items are allowed to run in the background.

Wacom notes that permissions should be added within the first 30 minutes after installing the driver. If you miss that window, reinstall the driver and set them again. Creative apps also need access: Wacom gives Photoshop as an example of an app that must be allowed under Accessibility to work properly with the tablet.

How to update the Wacom driver

The simplest way to update is from Wacom Center. Open it from the taskbar or Start menu on Windows, or from the Dock or Launchpad on Mac. Then select the Settings icon and open General settings to see whether an update is available for the driver or your device’s firmware.

Major operating system updates are the usual reason a working tablet suddenly stops. Before you upgrade Windows or macOS on a studio machine, check that Wacom’s current driver supports the new version, and plan the update when you have time to test.

Back up your Wacom settings before you reinstall

A clean reinstall removes your custom settings, such as pen button shortcuts, ExpressKey layouts and app-specific settings. Back them up first:

  • Wacom Center: open the global settings, choose Backup and restore, then New backup and give it a name.
  • Windows: run PrefUtil, the Wacom Tablet Preference File Utility, found in C:\Program Files\Tablet\Wacom. It can back up, restore and remove preferences.
  • macOS: open Wacom Tablet Utility in Applications, Wacom Tablet. It offers the same backup, restore and remove options.

Wacom advises testing all pen and button functions before you restore an old backup. If problems come back after restoring, the old preferences file may be corrupt and it’s better to set things up again.

Wacom driver not working? Fixes to try in order

Most driver problems come down to a few causes. Work through these in order:

  1. Check the connection. Plug straight into the computer, try another port and, for pen displays, check both the video and USB connections.
  2. Restart the computer. Windows needs a restart after installing the driver, and macOS needs one after changing Input Monitoring.
  3. Check Mac permissions. If the cursor doesn’t move or the pen doesn’t click on a Mac, review Accessibility and Input Monitoring as described above. Wacom suggests removing the Wacom entries, restarting and reinstalling if the switches are already on.
  4. Reset preferences. In Wacom Center, open General settings and use Reset all settings to return the device to its defaults. A corrupt preferences file can make buttons and pressure behave strangely.
  5. Do a clean reinstall. Uninstall, restart, install the latest driver and reconnect, following the steps for your operating system above.
  6. Check the pen itself. A worn nib can make drawing feel wrong even when the driver is fine. Our Wacom nibs guide explains when to replace it.

If none of this helps, the issue may be the device or the cable rather than the software, and that is the time to contact support.

Rolling out the Wacom driver in studios, schools and offices

In a design studio, an architecture firm or a university lab, standardise the setup. Install the same driver version on every machine, test it on one workstation before a wide update, and keep a backup of the agreed button and pen settings so a reinstall takes minutes.

If you’re still choosing hardware, see our Wacom pen tablets and Wacom pen displays, or compare two popular options in Movink 13 vs Intuos Pro Small. Devices such as the Wacom Intuos Small, the Wacom Intuos Pro Medium and the Wacom Cintiq 16 all use the same Wacom driver on Windows and Mac.
